Molly smiled to herself as she looked across the tea garden later that week.

Her brothers had certainly outdone themselves. With the help of Pete and Tom, they had fixed up the tarpaulin awnings and now a number of tables were protected, whatever the weather.

Of course, ever since the awnings had been put up, the sun had been shining but she didn’t mind. The tea garden was now weatherproof which was one thing ticked off her to-do list.

However, they weren’t the only new additions to the garden.

Geoff had fixed a tiered planter up against the far wall which had started to be covered with some hanging pink fuchsias which were cascading down the outside. Also, the Mothers and Toddlers group had finished their latest project. A rather large bug hotel had been placed in a far corner and apparently was already receiving visitors of the insect kind, much to the fascination of the children who checked on its progress daily. Molly was a little less fascinated and hoped that the bugs kept to their side of the garden and didn’t venture near to her customers. Or her!

Best of all, whenever Molly arrived at the garden, another couple of tables had appeared overnight from Logan. It was as if the garden fairies had magically conjured up a new piece of furniture.

Day by day, there were more places for any future customers to eat at. The only thing that was missing was actual customers until she reopened in two days’ time, but Molly didn’t have time to worry about that for now.

Logan was still refusing any kind of payment for the furniture, so Molly had begun to take him a piece of cake each day as well as lunch.

‘You don’t need to do this,’ he told her as he lifted the lid on a freshly baked cheesy potato tart.

‘But I want to,’ she replied.

He sighed. ‘I should really give this back to you, but my mouth is watering at the sight of that pastry.’

‘All home-made,’ she told him, in a proud tone.

Her years of experimenting meant that she remained confident in her abilities as a baker despite her serious doubts about her business capabilities.

‘Besides,’ she carried on. ‘What’s the harm in paying you back for all those lovely tables?’

He swallowed a piece of tart before giving her a stern look. ‘Because life doesn’t work that way,’ he told her.

‘You mean, kindness?’ she said, smiling. ‘Gratitude? That kind of thing?’ She shook her head. Sometimes his inability to see the good in anyone amazed her.

‘Everyone’s out for something in this world,’ he muttered, before finishing off the tart.

‘Not me,’ said Molly, determined to make him see the good in someone.

‘No,’ he said, staring at her. ‘Not you.’

She shuffled awkwardly under his intense gaze.

‘Or your grandad,’ she told him. ‘Surely we can agree on that?’

He scowled at her but his eyes were twinkling with humour. ‘You’ve made your point.’

She grinned. ‘Oh, I’m not nearly done trying to remove those cynical spectacles you insist on wearing.’

‘Instead
